Don't buy HP. HP's screen brightness control don't work in Ubuntu.

Be careful with Fujitsu. My Fujitsu laptop's (LH532) UEFI interface
has some bug. I cannot install kernel version's prior to 3.11. It is
rewriting the UEFI BIOS !!!! I have to open the case and short the
jumpers to get the BIOS back. Risky business. However recent Linux
distros have kernel > 3.11. I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 and Fedora
20 without issues.

Also it is generally good to avoid laptops with secure boot.

Couple of pointers.

Make price enquirers with local shops. You can bargain and you might get
it for a lesser price compared to online purchase.

In the price range you are looking, consider Asus models. Mine is a " *Asus
K53SD-SX805D or K53SD-SX110D (Intel Core i3 - 4GB - 500GB - 15.6") **Laptop*".
This costed around 31k from homeshop18 in 2012. It is presently running
Debian wheezy with no issues. I used and still use a Thinkpad T42 and find
no issues with the Asus and in some aspects it is better. No play in the
hinges and I prefer the chicklet keypad as well. I came back to Debian
because Ubuntu had some issues with the laptop and I had no time to spare
to fix those and Debian install installed without any issues.

Always check other sites when compared to Flipkart. I have found Flipkart
prices on the higher side.

Danial,

The point is: Do you want a Honda Car or a Maruthi Car ?

if (Honda Car)
{
     printf ("Buy Thinkpad. Because its worth maintaining, the hardware
components are available. You can find it in Lenovo forums");
}
else
{
printf(" Buy Any Other Laptop. But the hardware components are difficult
to get and costly sometimes. Even though you get it somehow, its not
worth maintaining it. Its not worth spending that much time, money and
effort  for maintaining those laptops.");
}

I own a thinkpad and I realized this difference when I tried to repair
it, after 5 years of daily use.

All the best,

Hi Justin,

Thank you for your advice, but when I am talking to local shops over phone
they all are quoting higher price than online.

One of our members Mr. Anathanarayanan suggested me Fujitsu Lifebook
AH552MC3A5ID (3rd Gen Intel Core i3 - 4GB RAM- 500GB HDD- 15.6 Inches) for
RS 30000/- and he has stock available to deliver.

Is it true, Lenevo products has hardwar backdoor?

Hi Danial

I don't know about backdoors and Lenovo. In anycase, they don't have as
many backdoors as the CIA and MI5 as is evident from Snowden files.
 Backdoor concept is slightly tricky, for example in India I understand
that for an ISP to get license they need to provide high speed snooping
port for government eavesdrop. In which case the entire internet is
backdoored here.

Once I come across a Lenovo laptop which had issues with Linux kernel based
distro's and the keypad. No matter what we did, we could not get the
keypad to work and at that time we had come to the conclusion that there
was some issue with the hardware and windows was overcoming that at the
driver level or even worse there was no standard keyboard hardware and the
signals were being handled by windows driver directly like the old Win
Modems.

Thank you
Justin

Hi Anu Bhaskar,

Is it possible to enable legacy boot in your laptop? My sister's laptop
(Sony Viao) has UEFI secure boot (with windows 8) and Ubuntu is booting
perfectly as live mode!

I got a best price form Gils Lap World, (authorized dealers of Fujitsu)

Fujitsu Lifebook AH552 (3rd Gen Intel Core i3 - 4GB RAM- 500GB HDD- 15.6
Inches) for RS 29000/-

I cannot find any other brands offering the same configuration laptop
around RS 29000/-.

One of my work friends Ms. Preethi bought this laptop 2 weeks before and
she installed Ubuntu gnome edition 13.10, all are working perfect!

*Aniyan Rajan, *I have a 4 year old Acer aspire pentium dua-lcore laptop
working fine, but it is not supported hardware visualization!
For me a laptop's maximum usage is for 4 years.

*Thank you all for your suggestions.*

Cheers,
Danial José

Dear Danial,
Go for lenovo G580 series i5 4th gen, 1tb hdd, Dos under 37k. Please don't

Hi,

Legacy mode is not there in my Fujitsu laptop. Its better you check
the laptop's brochure or if possible ask for a demo.
 Fujitsu laptops usually costs less.

Re: [ilugcochin] [OT] Advice needed to buy a new Laptop.

Hi All,

Last week I bought this *Fujitsu Lifebook AH552* for just INR 29000/- it is
the cheapest laptop available here (Kerala, India). With below
configuration;

RAM : 4GB

Processor : Intel® Core™ i3-3120M CPU @ 2.50GHz × 4

Processor : Intel® Ivybridge Mobile

It comes without an operating system, so Installed Ubuntu 14.04 on their
premises.

All the hardware components are worked perfectly as it made for Ubuntu,
like

Brightness adjustment, wakeup from standby mode, sound, camera, microphone,
bluetooth etc.

*But later i found that it had some issues with touchpad. Mainly it
sensitivity was too low and because of this scrolling (both two finger and
side scrolling) double click taping was not working smooth.*

*Touch Pad : AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint*

After some research on the Internet I found the solution and I am sharing
my solution here for all of you have facing the same trouble.

  *Steps*

Find the device name

xinput list

in my case it is *AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint*

then find the current values for the device

xinput list-props "AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint" | grep -i finger

*In my case it was 12, 15, 0*

next we have to change the values as per below

*12, 12, 0*

for that we can use below command

xinput set-prop "AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint" "Synaptics Finger" 12, 12, 0

Now the touch pad will be normal and also side scrolling should be working.

Finally we have to save the changes permanently, other wise this will not
work after rebooting.

*Create a bash file*

sudo nano /usr/bin/fujitsu-lifebook-ah552-alps-touc-pad-settings.sh

the first line of the text should be this

#!/bin/sh

and after two line paste the command we previously used for changing the
values.

xinput set-prop "AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint" "Synaptics Finger" 12, 12, 0

save the file using shortcut ctrl+o, then exit ctrl+x

*make the file executable*

sudo chmod a+x /usr/bin/fujitsu-lifebook-ah552-alps-touc-pad-settings.sh

That's all! Do not forget to reboot the machine!

*Disable two finger scrolling on mouse setting to enable side scrolling.*
 Cheers,
Danial José

Hi,

There is a company called ITNet in ravipuram who often gives me good deals.
If you haven't checked with them, I can send their contact off-the list.

Also AFIK most of the devices has a margin of 12.5% and this seems the
amount the dealers play around with. I tend to stay away from anyone
offering more than 10% discount on the MRP.
