Assuming you're referring to font displayed in webpages, you'll need to
also tell Conkeror to override the site's own font settings. Here's how
I force pages to use my default serif font:

session_pref("browser.display.use_document_fonts", 0);
session_pref("font.default", "serif");

OK, you're assigning Times as your serif font at the system level, so
I'm assuming the Conkeror about:config's "font.alias-list" is showing
"Times" in place of "serif". All I can suggest is walking through the
relevant sections of about.config in both Conkeror and Iceweasel and
look for discrepancies.

Ok, thanks again.

Searching with about:config in conkeror (not only iceweasel),
as you suggested, did the trick:

I get Times now, if I set the entry within about:config,

and this entry in turn is saved in my

  .conkeror.mozdev.org/conkeror/cgszr6u2.default/prefs.js

entries there seem to have precedence over

  .conkerorrc

(I had my font prefs specified there originally)

or at least I don't know why my .conkerorrc font entries
aren't used.

But fine with me for now, if I have to set them in about:config

Thanks a lot for your fast reply.

Unfortunately I still don't see Times
(for the exact same page that I see rendered in Times
in iceweasel).

Thanks again, anyway, I will dig deep as time allows.

PS: I have sent this answer already,
but it didn't get through (instead I was
asked to confirm my subscription to this list
a second time?), sorry, should you get my
message twice now
