We need a domain name!

We need a domain name!

From:
Brynn

Hey all. I've tasked myself with making a website for the project. It won't
be anything fancy, just a mission statement, a blog frontpage with project
updates, a team page, and probably forums to make discussion easier for us
than using a mailing list. We need to decide on a domain name, though:

playbq.org: I like this one, Steve came up with it, but the problem is that
playbq.com is an actual, big site. Steve's idea was to prefix it with
"play" or "play-" somehow, so feel free to throw out ideas for that.
projectbq.org: I like this one personally, also the .com variant is
available.
bqcentral.org: Justin's suggestion. His idea is that we might one day be a
central hub for lots of different projects/teams developing off the base BQ
code.

Justin also suggested that we stick with .org TLDs to prevent the project
from appearing to be a commercial enterprise, though we can open discussion
to change that if someone likes.

What do you all think?

Next suggestion: teambq

i.e. teambq.org & teambq.com

Both are available, and it's probably a
good idea to get both .org/.com if we can.

Damn, that would have been good. 6 letters, easy to remember, etc.

I'm really still tempted to vote for that one, regardless of the .com
people. Their site isn't all that big, and seems to have launched just
last week (for a smartphone app). :/

Instead of "play", are there other good 4 letter action words
that could be used instead? (not the rude ones :>)

i.e. <word>bq.org / <word>bq.com

We should probably vote here, on list. +1 style.

i.e. everyone who wants to, responds with +1 for their choice. Give it
24 hours or so, then tally and choose winner.

But, before we do that, let's ask for other suggestions
in case anyone has an obvious keeper? :)

Good suggestion. :)

We'd better assemble a full list of suggestions
to vote on.

Um, lets wait a full day before doing that
though, just to give people a chance.

Btw, Brynn the domain/website is your baby so
do you want to do the honours? (ie assemble
list, call for votes, announce results, etc)

Sure, I'll send out an email in a day or two with everyone's
suggestion and then give another day or two for everyone to reply with
their vote. To keep email spam down on the group, feel free to email
me directly with your domain name suggestions and votes, and I'll
publicly list all the votes at the end.

Facebook has that "Voting" feature thing. That would be sweet if you
could come up with something that simple. But whatever works! :]

So here are the voting options (hopefully I didn't miss any):

projectbq.org (.com also available)
bqcentral.org (.com also available)
bqdev.org
getbq.org
devquest.org
playbq.org (.com taken)
openbq.org (.com also available)
teambq.org (.com also available)

I vote for projectbq.org, and William already also +1'd projectbq.org.

Feel free to email me directly or just reply. I'll publicly list the
results at the end. I'll leave it open for 48 hours from now.

If we have two very close winners then we can have a run-off vote if needed.

It looks like teambq is ahead by one vote, so I'll go ahead and claim
it the winner. Hopefully no one who voted projectbq has issue with it,
I think it's a good name too. I'll register it in a couple days when I
have time to start on the site.

Thanks for voting everyone!

Site is up, nothing much on it though. If anyone wants an admin
account to work on it, just let me know. I need to change the forum
layout so it's not all bunched together, and I'm hoping I can find a
way to integrate OpenID or something so we don't all have to make new
accounts just to post on the forums there.

Good work Brynn. :) Please create an account for me on it
(username "justinclift"). Might as well make me an admin too, I'll
try not to break things. :)

Personally, I don't have much experience with Wordpress. Only used
it for very basic occasional blog entries about Aeolus things, and
also installing a few basic Wordpress plugins (ie to allow embedded
youtube videos).

But, I'm probably ok as a backup admin, in case someone gets their
account locked out or something. :)

For sheer numbers, figuring out how to let people sign in using
their Google account or Facebook account might be the go.

But... I have no idea of the effort required there. If it helps,
Khan Academy allows signing in via Google account, and all of their
source is on GitHub. (that's the theory anyway :>)
