Service Integration

Service Integration

Talking about service integration in the 'The Vision' thread got me
thinking a little. We could really do some cool stuff like having a Movie
Theatre structure in a map. Imagine this:

   1. A bunch of players are in a "movie theatre" building facing north.
   2. A YouTube video is "hanging" on the back (north) wall.
   3. A player requests control of the movie and an admin gives it to them.
   4. The player with control of the movie searches for a youtube video
   using an in-game search feature.
   5. Said player selects "play" and the movie starts playing for everyone,
   periodically sending out sync messages.
   6. If the player in charge pauses the movie, it pauses for everyone.
   7. If the player in charge leaves the theatre or the game, control of
the movie goes back to the admin that gave up control.

There are so many other things we can do like:

   - using dropbox to store and load maps
   - posting screenshots (like "kill shots" showing the moment right after
   you die) to facebook/instagram
   - using your facebook friends list to build parties in game

I know the movie theatre example might sound crazy or technically
challenging (and it might be) but it would be cool nonetheless.

I've seen a concept very similar to that in a few different games. The
best example I have is in a Half Life 2 mod called Gary's Mod, there's
a server where people just sit in a movie theater map and take turns
choosing youtubes for everyone to watch. It's a cool project for sure,
you should check it out if you haven't.

Is this what you're talking about:

If so, that's awesome and it's really close to what I was thinking (only
2D).

Heh, that does sound pretty nifty. Definite cool factor.

No idea personally how to implement it, but I'm pretty new to Node.js, so
will keep to simpler tasks for now. ;)
